Local Attorney Provides Testimony at United States Senate Hearing
Today’s Hearing to Focus on Military Discrimination and the Uniformed Services
Employment & Reemployment Rights Act
October
31, 2007 – Albany, New
York
– A Capital Region attorney will speak today before the Veterans’ Affairs Committee of the U.S. Senate. Mathew B. Tully, the founding partner of Tully
Rinckey, PLLC will provide testimony at the hearing on the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA.)
Tully will give his testimony in front of the committee regarding military discrimination issues. The National Guardsman and Iraq War veteran is a leading attorney in the field of USERRA litigation and is often looked at as an expert regarding veterans’ rights. His law firm is one of the few in the nation dedicated to the protection and preservation of the rights of veterans and reservists.
“This honor of appearing before the United States Senate to provide my guidance, insight, and suggestions on important matters facing our country is extremely humbling and a great honor,” said Tully.
Tully's testimony is expected to criticize the United States Department of Labor's handling of alleged violations of USERRA. He will announce a way for the Federal Government to save millions of dollars over the next decade, while better protecting the rights of members of the National Guard and Reserves. He is also expected to call on Congress to give the Office of Special Counsel greater power to discipline federal workers who violate USERRA, as in Hatch Act violation cases. These proposals, if acted upon by Congress and signed into law by the President, are expected to bring about major changes to USERRA. The Act was last significantly updated in 1994.
The Veterans’ Affairs Committee of the U.S. Senate is responsible for the oversight of veterans’ issues. Committee members include Senators Barack Obama, Lindsey Graham, and Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
The hearing and Tully’s testimony will be broadcast on C-SPAN on November 1.
