Records Show More DWAI Arrests Over Past 10 Years

A recent Freedom of Information Law request shows a surge in the numbers of arrests in drivers under the influence of drugs.

In the period between 2004 and 2013, busts for Driving While Ability Impaired increased 128 percent in the Finger Lakes.

Peter Pullano, partner at Tully Rinkey Law Firm, says he’s seen many teens who say they’re more comfortable in the car with a driver under the influence of marijuana than they are with a driver who is drunk.

In Monroe County, the number of DWAI arrests more than doubled over the 10 year period.

Pullano added, “Officers will become, if they haven’t already, more sophisticated in detecting the signs of abuse, of impairment, caused by the drug and then the punishment here will be as serious.”
