In Afghanistan, Law Firm Partner Awarded Purple Heart

Mathew Tully was awarded the Purple Heart in Afghanistan the day his Albany-based law firm opened its new office in Syracuse.

Tully, a lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard, was injured in a suicide attack in Logar Province on Aug. 7, according to Army records. No U.S. service members were killed in the attack.

A certificate awarding him the Purple Heart, signed by Secretary of the Army – and former North Country congressman – John McHugh, is dated Aug. 20.

It was Aug. 20 when the Tully Rinckey law firm opened its office on Plum Street in Syracuse.

In February, Tully visited Syracuse as he was recruiting attorneys for the firm and looking for office space. Weeks later he was ordered to Afghanistan.

A release from Tully Rinckey announcing the awarding of the Purple Heart notes that since 2003 Tully has stepped away from the firm three times to serve in Iraq, Egypt and Afghanistan.

In a message Aug. 12, Tully brushed off the attack: “Got blown up in a suicide attack on Tuesday (minor injuries) but I am back to work today!”
