Summer 2008 Newsletter

Mathew B. Tully shakes hands with Egyptian Army Major Mohamed Adel Abd El Gaffar, known to his friends as "Shabrawy". Goodwill Makes Good Business Sense

If you have read my newsletter columns lately, you may see that I have applied many of the lessons that I learned in the military to my business. One of those lessons is that building goodwill makes good business sense. Recently, my military unit had the honor of going to the Middle East to build goodwill relationships with our friends in the Egyptian Army.

Contrary to what the mainstream media is reporting, the United States military routinely trains with foreign militaries, both here in America and overseas. Sometimes, like this time, it was by sending the cream of the American Military Officer Corps to Egypt to learn about how they fight, to learn about their culture, and most importantly, to build a personal connection with warriors who have stood shoulder to shoulder with us in many a conflict.

This building of goodwill may not result in a military victory today or tomorrow but it will pay off with big dividends in the future. The relationships that we made will likely last a lifetime.

At Tully Rinckey, we often quietly and without fanfare help others who are less fortunate than us, which I consider engaging in goodwill. In 2007, we spent over $100,000 creating goodwill in one way or another. Sometimes, we do the obvious like perform pro bono legal services for somebody who could not otherwise pay, other times we donate a luxury private box at the Times Union Center to a family that would otherwise not be able to afford the admission price.

The people that attend almost always send a sincere thank you note after the event. However, one time I had the fortune of walking past our suite when a little girl (about 3 or 4 years old) who was in foster care was entering it. I watched as her eyes got as big as blue plates when she saw that she would be “sitting where the millionaires sit” when she started to cry. She got a big hug from her foster mother who asked “why are you crying?” and all I could hear was “I hope that I can help children’s dreams come true like this someday.”

I was taken back and became teary eyed. Despite all the great things we do here at Tully Rinckey, my greatest achievement was helping a little girl see this show and hopefully keeping the circle of kindness and generosity going. This recent event was one of the redefining moments of my life.

As we go about our daily lives and worry about how to pay the mortgage, how to care for sick relatives, or even how to pay our debts, I hope that you share in the joy of giving to others - not to get in the newspaper or on TV, but because it is the right thing to do. If you do, I am sure you will be rewarded with personal happiness like I have been.
