Peter P. Charnetsky, Esq.
Binghamton Managing Partner
Peter's 30 years of combined experience on the bench and as an attorney allows him to approach legal cases with the knowledge of the court system that most other attorneys simply lack. With nine years of experience as an Acting Supreme Court Justice and a decade of experience as a Broome County Family Court Judge, Peter is able to use his unique perspective and courtroom knowledge for the benefit of his clients; particularly with respect to family and matrimonial law and criminal defense matters. As the Managing Partner of Tully Rinckey PLLC's Binghamton office, Peter also practices estate planning; including probate and guardianship matters and real estate law.
After spending ten years deciding verdicts for thousands of cases from the bench, Peter will use his comprehensive knowledge of the courtroom to develop customized case strategies for his clients that provide them with the best chance of success in their legal matter. Put simply, Peter's judicial courtroom experience and knowledge is now on your side of the argument.
A native to Binghamton, New York, Peter came to Tully Rinckey PLLC with 30 years of legal experience, including 10 years of judicial experience and 20 years of experience in private practice. Before joining Tully Rinckey PLLC, Peter operated a solo law practice in Binghamton for fifteen years, where he practiced family and matrimonial law; including contested and uncontested divorce, child custody, child support and adoption. He also practiced criminal defense including DWIs and other felony and misdemeanor offenses. He currently serves as a settlement officer with the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department Civil Appeals Settlement Program.
During his judicial career, Peter resolved over 25,000 cases, and the Broome County Bar Association and Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission both rated him as “highly qualified”. From 2005 to 2014, Peter served as a Broome County Family Court Judge. In this position, he heard cases involving child neglect, child custody, parent, sibling and grandparent visitation, juvenile delinquency, orders of protection, adoption, persons in need of supervision (PINS), paternity and child support.
From 2006 to 2014, Peter presided over Integrated Domestic Violence Court for all Broome County courts. He routinely heard cases involving child support, visitation, child neglect, family offense petitions, no-fault divorces, contested divorces, and related criminal matters.
Peter has been helping families long before he became an attorney. Before obtaining his juris doctor from Stestson University College of Law, he helped at-risk teenagers and their families as a residential family social worker for the Florida Sheriff’s Boys Ranch in Live Oak, Florida. For eight years, he served as a legal advisor for SUNY Binghamton Psychological Research and Training Clinic and for two years he served as Broome County’s elections commissioner.
Peter is very involved in the local community. In addition to serving as a coach for boys’ and girls’ recreational soccer teams, T-Ball, the ‘Kids Night Out’ League and junior and senior baseball leagues, he has served as a volunteer Judge for local high school mock trial competitions and the American Legion Oratorical Contest. He has also sat on the board of directors for the Broome County SOS Shelter for Abused Women and Broome County Mental Health Community Services, among other nonprofit organizations. Peter presently sits on the Board for the Crime Victims Assistance Center, Inc. and ACCORD, a Center for Dispute Resolution, Inc.
