CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. (WRGB) — A string of disturbing animal cruelty cases has shaken the Capital Region in recent months — from a pit bull starved and set on fire in Albany, to a Schenectady dog abandoned with its ear cut off, to dozens of animals found living in deplorable conditions in Westerlo. Families are also still mourning after dogs died at local boarding facilities.
These cases raise a difficult question: Are New York’s animal cruelty laws strong enough to protect animals, or are abusers slipping through the cracks?
To tackle the issue, CBS6’s Briana Supardi sat down with a panel of voices, including Schenectady County SPCA Chief Greg Rinckey, who have all played a role in these cases — from lawmakers and prosecutors to investigators and humane officers.
