Local attorney says schools and universities could mandate the COVID vaccine for students

SYRACUSE — Next week those who are 16 and older will be eligible to receive the COVID vaccine and Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon says they will target vaccinating high school and college students.

Rutgers University in New Jersey just recently made the vaccine mandatory for its students, but in New York can schools and universities require their students to get the shot?

Maria Morse, an Associate Attorney at Tully Rinckey, says, “I think that’s a complicated question but I would lean towards yes based on the fact they can mandate other types of vaccines such as measles.”
