ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) — Lorenz Kraus, who confessed on camera to CBS6’s Greg Floyd that he killed his parents, appeared in Albany County Court on Monday morning.
Kraus is accused of murdering his parents, Franz and Theresia Kraus, eight years ago. His confession aired exclusively on CBS6. Kraus now faces charges of first and second-degree murder, grand larceny, and first-degree identity theft following an indictment by an Albany County grand jury last week.
The case initially began as a financial crimes investigation, leading to the discovery of two bodies buried in the backyard of the home at 6 Crestwood Court in Albany. Kraus was arrested in the CBS6 parking lot after his confession. Legal experts suggest the viral nature of the confession could complicate jury selection, with the defense potentially seeking to suppress it at trial.
Greg Rinckey, founding partner of Tully Rinckey PLLC, noted, “It’s going to be key then, because if that confession is suppressed, now you need evidence that’s going to tie him to the crime. And you also have to be able to prove that he intentionally killed them. The government has to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Kraus appeared in court, pleading not guilty to charges. When asked by the judge, Kraus acknowledged that he was self employed and that he was married.
Kraus was remanded to the Albany County Jail and is due back in court on October 28th.
