ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) implemented a new point system that started Monday, altering how violations affect drivers’ licenses.
The biggest change is that now it’s possible to have your license suspended if you rack up ten points within 24 months.
‘Every single conviction will stay in your life longer now and that’s going to have an impact in a variety of ways,” said Aaron Pam, senior associate at Tully Rinckey.
Point values for certain violations are also increasing. Passing a stopped school bus and speeding in a work zone will now cost drivers eight points each.
The DMV may require drivers with seven points to attend a driver improvement clinic. Additionally, the new rules allow for permanent license revocation after four drug or alcohol-related convictions.
As this new point system goes into place, DMVs across the state will be closed on Friday’s as they undergo large-scale system upgrade.
