MENANDS, N.Y. (WTEN) — Numerous FedEx workers were laid off at a Menands facility in January, according to a WARN notice on the New York State Department of Labor website. The layoff reportedly affected 43 people.
The site is located at 590 Broadway. According to the Department of Labor, the shipping company initiated the layoffs on January 31.
FedEx told NEWS10 that affected employees were informed of the layoff weeks in advance. Jared Cook, a senior counsel at Tully Rinckey PLLC, said that this advanced warning — termed a WARN notice — is required for companies above a certain size by both state and federal law.
“If it’s part of a large layoff, the law does not say they can’t lay you off, it just says they need to give you sufficient notice,” Cook said.
FedEx also said the laid off workers were provided with outplacement support services.
“These decisions are never taken lightly and reflect our commitment to supporting affected employees — through job placement assistance, relocation aid, or severance, as applicable — while continuing to provide an outstanding experience for our customers,” FedEx said.
