Cianna A. Freeman-Tolbert, Esq.

Senior Associate

As a Senior Associate at Tully Rinckey PLLC, Cianna focuses her practice on immigration law. Cianna represents clients throughout the Upstate New York area and nationwide in cases involving family-based and employment-based visas, citizenship applications, asylum, deportation defense, and all other immigration matters, including appeals. Cianna is a full-service immigration law attorney who uses her skills and experience to develop unique strategies for each of her client’s cases.

Prior to joining the firm, Cianna gained experience both as an administrative law judge and defense attorney. Cianna has many years of immigration law experience, including experience with employment-based non-immigrant visas, such as H-1B and P, as well as family-based cases. She has independently prepared diverse immigration applications, including employment and family-based immigration petitions.

Cianna comes to the firm with experience corresponding and negotiating with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. embassies around the world, and other governmental agencies. Cianna’s experience communicating with government agencies, filing waivers, and submitting appeals has given her the knowledge and ability to address and resolve complex problems.

Previously, Cianna volunteered for CLINIC BIA Pro Bono Project and successfully argued an appeal for a client who was seeking asylum in the United States in order to escape from her abusive husband, who was an officer in the Haitian government.

Over the course of her practice, Cianna has used her analytical skills and keen knowledge of immigration law to win asylum, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and U-Visa cases. Specifically, Cianna has successfully argued asylum cases involving gang violence and homosexuality.

Cianna is Liberian-American and due to the Liberian Civil War in 1989 many of her family members and friends were separated and forced to relocate to the United States. Thus, Cianna channels her personal experience with the immigration process when representing her clients. Cianna’s practical knowledge and personal experience pair to make Cianna a tenacious and diligent attorney for her clients.

Cianna received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

When not at work, Cianna enjoys reading, attending a play or musical, and spending time with friends and family.
