Christian J. Root is a Partner in Tully Rinckey PLLC’s Binghamton office, where he focuses his practice in Family and Matrimonial Law.
Prior to joining Tully Rinckey, Christian was the longtime First Assistant County Attorney for Tioga County in Owego, N.Y., where he was in charge of the Department of Social Services Division (DSS). In that role, he represented the DSS in all legal proceedings, including the prosecution of child abuse and neglect cases, persons-in-need-of-supervision cases, juvenile delinquency proceedings, adult protective proceedings, child support proceedings and other legal proceedings. Christian also provided counsel and advice to the Commissioner and department heads and served on various committees within the County as directed by the County Attorney, provided legal assistance to other County Departments and represented the County, as necessary, in any legal proceedings.
Previously, Christian was DSS Counsel for the Tompkins County Department of Social Services in Ithaca, N.Y. There, he was responsible for representing the Department in all legal proceedings, including the prosecution of child abuse and neglect cases, child support cases and adult protective cases. He also provided counsel and advice to the Commissioner and unit heads within the Department. Christian was also Senior Staff Attorney for Legal Aid for Broome and Chenango, Inc., where he supervised staff attorneys and paralegals and focused his practice on Family Court, Matrimonial Law, Housing, Small Claims, Bankruptcy, Elder Law, as well as General Litigation. Prior, he worked in private practice in Johnson City, N.Y., focusing his practice on General Litigation, Family Court and Criminal Defense. He began his legal career at Legal Aid for Broome and Chenango, Inc.
Christian obtained his law degree from Vermont Law School, cum laude, and his Bachelor of Science degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, cum laude, in criminal justice. He also earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in criminal justice and forensics from SUNY Broome.
