TROY, NY (WRGB) –Troy is getting a new city hall.
The Mantello administration announced Tuesday morning that they would be moving to the historic Proctors Theater on 4th Street.
Mayor Carmella Mantello says city offices will move to 4th Street by January 2027.
For nearly two decades, the city rented the 5th floor of the Hedley building on River Street.
First Columbia, the company that owns the building, says the city hasn’t gone through the proper channels to terminate their lease agreement.
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the future home, the permanent home for our city hall,” said Mantello at Tuesday’s press conference.
The project is in partnership with the city’s Local Development Corporation (LDC).
“For too long, city hall has lacked a true home, but today, folks are beginning to change,” added Mantello.
The renovations would include a canopy parking lot with 75 to 100 parking spots. The plan is to keep as much of the original architecture in the 1914 building.
According to documents obtained by CBS6, in 2024, the city and First Columbia signed a 5-year lease agreement.
In that agreement was an early termination clause in the agreement.
“That was specifically that the city council had to approve a new site before June 1st [2025] before our notice could be activated. That never occurred,” said First Columbia attorney Michael Macomber from Tully Rinckey.
Mayor Mantello was asked about the lease agreement with First Columbia.
“Our attorney feels very strong, we gave notification, feels very strong per the lease,” said Mantello. “The city council has to act on a land development agreement, and has to act on the lease, so there will be council action on this.”
“It’s news to me. Honestly, I don’t understand how the city is taking the position they are. The lease itself is pretty clear,” added Macomber.
