The New York State Human Rights Law makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against hiring people who have been convicted of a non-violent felony or misdemeanor and completed their sentence over 10 years ago. The law further extends protection for people convicted of a non-violent crime by allowing them to seal up to two records, which prevents employers from seeing their criminal pasts. Any employer that decides not to hire someone based on a non-violent crime that took place more than a decade ago risks being accused of discrimination.
